Very old PIXMA models from before 2012 — such as early PIXMA MG series printers without wireless — lack AirPrint entirely.

PIXMA iP series single-function printers: some wireless models like the iP110 support AirPrint, but many iP models are USB-only.

SELPHY models without AirPrint:

Canon Printers That Typically Lack AirPrint

USB-only printers across any Canon line cannot use AirPrint. No wireless means no network printing from your phone.

Canon PRO-1000 and some large-format PRO models may lack AirPrint despite having Wi-Fi, because they target professional workflows through Canon’s desktop software. Verify before assuming.

Some Canon business and production printers use proprietary management tools instead of AirPrint. These are office deployments, not home printers.

Canon IVY mini photo printers use Bluetooth and the Canon Mini Print app, not AirPrint.

Very old Canon models from before 2010 — PIXMA MP series, early imageCLASS models — generally lack AirPrint even if they have wireless through Canon’s older protocols.

How to Verify Your Canon Model

Do not guess based on the product family. Check the exact model number.

Canon product page. Search your model on usa.canon.com. The specifications section lists “AirPrint” under mobile printing or connectivity features.

Apple’s AirPrint printer list. Apple maintains a compatibility database on its support site. Search your Canon model for a definitive answer.

Print a network configuration page. On most Canon printers: Settings → Device settings → Print status → Network status print. The report lists supported protocols.

Printing From iPhone to a Canon Printer

The printing process is the same across all AirPrint-compatible Canon models.

Make sure your Canon printer is connected to Wi-Fi. Use the printer’s Setup menu or the Canon PRINT app to join your wireless network.

Confirm your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network — not cellular data, not a guest network.

Canon PRINT (formerly Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY) is the manufacturer’s free mobile app. Understanding what it adds helps you decide whether to install it.

AirPrint alone handles:

Canon PRINT adds:

You do not need Canon PRINT for AirPrint to function. Install it if you want scanning or prefer Canon’s file browser for print jobs.

Using Smart Printer With Canon AirPrint Printers

Smart Printer is a third-party iOS app that works with AirPrint-compatible Canon printers. It is not made by Canon and is not affiliated with any printer manufacturer. It uses the same AirPrint protocol built into iOS.

Smart Printer adds a document library, phone-based scanning, and a unified print workflow on top of basic AirPrint. If you print from your iPhone to a Canon printer regularly and want one place to manage files, it is worth trying. If you print occasionally, the built-in Share → Print method is simpler.

Smart Printer cannot add AirPrint to Canon models that lack it, and it does not replace the Canon PRINT app for scanning from your printer’s flatbed — that requires Canon’s proprietary scan protocol.

Troubleshooting Canon AirPrint Problems

When your Canon printer does not appear on your iPhone, try these fixes in order.

Network match. iPhone and printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks and AP isolation block printer discovery.

Restart everything. Power cycle the Canon printer, restart your iPhone, and retry after both devices reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Firmware update. Canon releases firmware that fixes AirPrint issues. Check usa.canon.com for your model or use the Canon PRINT app to check for updates.

Re-enter Wi-Fi credentials. If you changed your router or password, the printer may still be trying to connect to the old network. Run wireless setup again from the printer’s menu.

Disable VPN on iPhone. Active VPN connections sometimes interfere with local network discovery. Turn off VPN temporarily and test printing.

Check router settings. Multicast DNS (Bonjour) must be enabled. This is standard on home routers but sometimes disabled on corporate networks.
